IF TEAPOT hadn’t seen the man and the woman split up at the last minute, he’d have been toast. He was running away now, and he hadn’t made use of his advantage. But the Old Teapot wouldn’t have seen them at all, he reminded himself. Future Teapot would fight not run, he decided, but Current Teapot needed to.

There were at least three active shooters on the mountain so perhaps it was good that he ran, perhaps Future Teapot would run at the right times, too.

He slowed to a ballsy saunter when he neared the blockhouse, stopped in plain sight, and gave the signature birdcall; audibly on the second attempt. It was still raining and the other team might be nervous.

A second later he heard the reply. He wasn’t alone.

Many of Teapot’s older colleagues had actual military training, most of the younger ones had been recruited from tough childhoods, all of them loved guns and workouts. Except Teapot. He had allowed the idea that his ancestors had once been kings to seduce him away from the fact that he was more feasibly destined for middle management.

His new life had never really clicked. Teapot knew it, and so did his colleagues. He knew they had low expectations of him so he made sure he did everything right as he approached, taking a looping path, sticking to the thicker cover, stopping to check for a tail, and then confirming his final approach with a shrill whistle.

Teapot wanted to hug his two colleagues when he walked in, but instead he just shook his head. The two men knew what that meant about the fate of Chu. Then he remembered to salute. ‘The communists are coming,’ he said, ‘there are at least three enemy agents out there, in at least two teams. One man scaling the cliff – Wah and I caught him stealing the rabbit and dragon pieces, but he triggered the self-destruct process and escaped. That’s how Wah died. And a man and a woman are hiking the slope, maybe ten minutes behind me. I led them into this trap. Let’s radio base.’

‘Take a drink, sergeant, and a minute’s rest. Matrix, keep watch.’ And just like that, Teapot had given away authority again. He sat on his haunches and drank greedily as Sergeant Liu pulled the radio from his vest. ‘Base, we’ve got Teapot here, but Wah is dead. Three enemy agents reported incoming.’

‘What’s the status of those agents?’

‘Two approaching via the cliff path, armed but without armoured support. One more . . .’ Liu looked at Teapot. Teapot shrugged, ‘. . . current location unknown.’

‘Have you confirmed their loyalties?’

‘No uniforms or insignia sighted.’

‘Noted.’ There was a pause and muffled discussion.

‘Have you rigged all the sites?’

‘The first two from our side.’ Chan looked at Teapot. And Teapot realised his team’s mistake, though it had surely been his lieutenant’s job to know their orders. He nodded. ‘And the three from Team Alpha’s side, too.’

‘Good. Behave as if this is a communist attack. We’re picking
